Depuis son arrivée ici, en 1886, elle accueille les immigrants et les visiteurs de tous les coins du monde. Elle rêve tant de mettre les pieds à Manhattan qu’elle m’a demandé de revenir lui raconter ce que j’y ai vu de si extraordinaire.
Since her arrival here in 1886, she welcomes immigrants and visitors from around the world. She dreams of both set foot in Manhattan that she asked me to go tell her what I saw so extraordinary.
Je remonte donc l’Hudson river et m’apprête à découvrir cette cité de légende. Je l’ai parcourue tant de fois au travers des films de cinéma que je ne sais pas par où commencer. Central Park ? Le pont de Brooklyn ? Le mieux est de me laisser porter par mon inspiration.
I therefore back the Hudson river and am about to discover this city of legend. I've travelled it so many times through the movies that I don’t know where to begin. Central Park? The Brooklyn Bridge? It is best to let me bring my inspiration.
Je me fraye un chemin dans cette forêt de buildings et arpente les rues au hasard. Qui habite donc dans ces maisons immenses ? Certainement une grande famille à en juger par le nombre de fenêtres.
I ride in this forest of buildings and walk thru the streets at random. So who lives in these huge houses? Certainly a large family, judging by the number of its windows.
En tout cas, c’est sur, je suis bien aux Etats-Unis. Les symboles ne manquent pas, comme cet autocar scolaire ou encore l’omniprésence de la bannière étoilée. Les gratte-ciel finissent par me donner le vertige et il est temps de me poser un peu avant de poursuivre mon chemin.
In any case, it is on, I am in the United States. The symbols are not lacking, as the school bus or the omnipresence of starry banner. The skyscrapers give me dizzy and it is time to have a rest before continuing my journey.
Dès mon arrivée à l’hôtel, je suis accueillie en grande pompe par une troupe de musiciens qui me souhaitent la bienvenue. Ici, le kitch fait partie du décor, les styles se mélangent dans ce grand melting-pot architectural et humain.
Upon my arrival at the hotel, I am greeted with much fanfare by a troupe of musicians who welcome me. Here, the kitsch is part of the decor, styles blend in this great architectural and human melting pot.
Je reprend mes esprits et décide d’emprunter les rues étroites et animées du West-side en direction du sud. Les fameux taxis jaunes me font de l’œil mais je préfère marcher. Après-tout, j’ai tout mon temps dans cette ville qui ne dort jamais.
I resume my mind and decide to follow the narrow and busy streets of West-side heading south. The famous yellow cabs are tempting but I prefer walking. After all, I have all my time in this city that never sleeps.
Le spectacle est dans la rue et il n’est pas rare de croiser le drôle, le surprenant ou l’incongru comme cette limousine publicitaire. Tiens, ce policier a même troqué sa Harley-Davidson contre un cheval. Le Far-West lui manque sûrement !
The show is on the street and it is not uncommon to cross the funny, the surprising or incongruous as this advertising Limousine. Here, the policeman has even traded his Harley-Davidson against a horse. The Wild West missed him surely!
Au détour d’un block, je tombe sur un gigantesque chantier : Ground Zero. La blessure peine à se refermer même si les New Yorkais ont depuis longtemps prouvé au monde leur capacité à continuer à aller de l’avant en toutes circonstances.
At the bend of a block, I arrive on a huge site: Ground Zero. The wound is difficult to heal even though New Yorkers have long proved to the world their ability to continue to move forward in all circumstances.
J’ai besoin d’air et me dirige alors vers les quais pour faire un break. Ce petit parc tombe à point nommé pour décompresser de l’agitation fébrile de la cité. Je mangerai bien un morceau dans ce petit pub typique de South Street.
I need air and then direct me to the docks to make a break. This little park is timely to decompress the feverish excitement of the city. I should have some lunch in this small typical pub of South Street.
La ballade m’a fatigué mais je ne peux quitter New York sans aller m’étourdir dans la féérie de Broadway. Les néons claquent et il fait jour en pleine nuit. Allez, une dernière petite sucrerie et au lit ! Demain je retournerai voir la statue de la liberté pour lui dire combien cette ville est fascinante !
The ride was tiring but I can not leave New York without diving in the magic of Broadway. The neon signs illuminates and it is daylight at night. Come on, one last sweet and I go to bed! Tomorrow I will go back to see the Statue of Liberty to tell her how this city is fascinating!
